The Indespensable Character Artistes

A good movie is simply incomplete without good character artists. Every film maker will agree that character artists add their own flavor to a movie as they essentially take the story forward. We take a look at various character artistes especially the new breed who have essentially carved a place for themselves not only in Bollywood but in the hearts of their fans too.

Vineet Singh: This actor has been doing non descript roles in films like City of Gold and Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii. But it was his role as Danish Khan in Anurag Kashyap’s cult movie Gangs of Wasseypur that made everyone notice him. A practioner with MD In Ayurveda, Vineet gave up everything to follow his passion as an actor. Once agian his role in Anurag  Kashyap’s Ugly made everyone notice this talented actor. It also won him his first screen nomination.

Swara Bhaskar: She started her film career with a 2009 film Madholal Keep Walking but it was her role of Payal in the rom com Tanu Weds Manu that brought her into prominence. Her next role as Bindiya in Raanjhana made the critics and audiences sit up and take notice. She was once again seen in Tanu Weds Manu Returns which was an extension of her 2011 role from Tanu Weds Manu. All her films have garnered her critical acclaim. She was also seen in Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. She won the best Actress award for her role of a determined mohter of a stubborn teenager in Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s directorial debut Nil Battey Sannata, 2nd Silk Road International Film Festival in Fuzhou, China. The actress wants to do meaty lead roles.

Deepak Dobriyal: He made his presence felt as Rajju in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara but it was his role as Pappi, Manu’s best friend in Tanu Weds Manu that won the the hearts of the fans and critics alike. Deepak Dobriyal has many films to his credit but he will always remain popular as Pappi from Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Though he has essayed negative roles in many films like Dabangg 2 and Gulal he will be remembered for his comic timing. We was also see in   Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

Vijay Raaz: He has done many nondescript roles in movies earlier but his break through came with Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding. He was more noticeable as ruthless gangster in Delhi Belly and other films like Dekh Bhai Dekh, Mr. Joe B. Carvalhot, Kya Dilli Kya Lahore and the recent Second Hand Husband. But it was his role as Jaan Mohammed a local MLA-gangster in Dedh Ishqikya that took away all the accolades.

Sheeba Chadda: She has played character roles in films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Parzania, Delhi 6 and Luck by Chance earlier but her role in Talaash as Nirmala a sex worker in love with Tairmur’s character made every one notice her. Later it was her role as the quirky Nain Tara Tuwari a tyrannical highly opinionated bua in Sharat Katariya’s Dum Laga Ke Haisha that  took all the accolades.

Adil Hussain: People loved his role as the menacing villain colonel in Sriram Raghavan’s Agent Vinod. The film did not do well at the box office but Adil made a mark on the commercial circuit. Later his roles in films like Ishqiya, Kaminey and Miran Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi got him noticed. However it took Gauri Shinde’s English Vinglish where he was cast as Sridevi’s husband that really made Bollywood notice this multitalented actor. He played some hard hitting roles in Prawal Raman’s  Main Aur Charles, Leena Yadav’s  Parched, Danis Tancovic’s  Tigers and Nishikant Kamat’s Force 2

Varun Sharma: As the lovable Choocha in Fukrey or Delhi Boy Manjot whom Dolly deceives in Dolly Ki Doli,  Varun has carved a niche of his own with his audience. He loves the characters that he is playing.  As the best friend, confidante and lawyer with his great comic timing in Kapil Sharma’s Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, Varun has once again made the audiences notice him. With films like Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale in his kitty he is now looking forward to Fukrey 2  and Raabta with Sushant Singh Rajput.

Jamie Lever: Daughter of famous comedian Johnny Lever, Jamie Lever has followed her father’s footsteps in Bollywood. She has already displayed her acting histrionics and comic timings as Champa in Kapil Sharma’s debut venture Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon and has already won her audience. It remains to be seen what she will be doing next and will she usurp her father’s audience.

Tisca Chopra: Taare Zameen Par was her calling card. Films like Dil Toh Bachcha  Hai Ji and Ankur Arora Murder case went on to prove  that she was no ordinary actress. Tisca has done a huge variety of roles and she chooses them wisely. With films  Sunny Deol’s Ghayal Once Again, Loveshsudaa and Dear Dad she has created her won benchmarks.
